The Indian Girls at the Ponemah Celebrate the Fourth |
The village of Wayne and the surrounding hills thrilled with patriotic feelings on the Fourth of July. From Wayne itself and the many beautiful homes in the suburbs fireworks were displayed, lighting up and displaying the beauties of that suburban district. Ponemah, 1½ miles north of Wayne, the summer home of the Indian girls, was beautifully dressed with the Stars and Stripes, and more than a hundred girls took part in games in the pretty grove, after which they gathered around the refreshment tables. The Rev. L.M. Robinson reviewed the history of the Declaration of Independence, and the Rev. J. Gray Bolton made a short address, at the close of which hearty cheers were given for the founder of the institution, Mrs. J. Bellangee Cox. In the evening the children enjoyed a display of fireworks on the grounds of Ivy Croft, near the institution. Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer Fri., July 6, 1888, p. 2 |
