1899.45029 p. 79 of NARA record (#97 in top right corner)

December 1898

Joseph Twin, Winnebago reservation, Nebraska, had attended to Reservation School for one year. He was asked, “What do you learn at the School?”

“Nothing.”

“What do you do?”

“Nothing.”

“How do you pass your time?”

“Doing nothing but going around.”

“Do not the teachers ask you to do something?”

“No.”

“Did you go to them and ask if they would not get a job?”

“Colonel Given promised about six times that he would get me work, but he did not.”

“How long have you been at the School?”

“Two years and four months.”

“In all that time have you been doing nothing?”

“For about four or five months I was driving the Home wagon; beyond that I have not done anything.”

“Did you never go into the class room?”

“No.”

“How many are there leading this idle life?”

“There must be about fifty.”

He stated that there are only about five boys in the advanced class room, and that he was very much dissatisfied with the way the school was managed.
