The 1899 Occupations of 319 Lincoln Institution Indian Boys

In 1899, in response to complaints about the conditions at the Educational Home, Mary McHenry Cox responded with a list of 319 students who had been at the Lincoln Institution1. The information on the students included when they left the Institution, together their location and employment in 1899.

Most Indians took up farming in the Reservations, as that was a (somewhat) viable occupation. There was little money in the Reservations so it was very difficult to sustain a business in the trades taught in the Lincoln Institution.

Many of the younger pupils continued their education in local schools after their time at the Institution.
