Entertainments at the Lincoln Institution, 1881 |
The amusements enjoyed during 1881 were as follows:- March 1st, the older boys went to see the minstrel troupe; March 14th, to see Cinderella, through the kindness of Mrs. L. Mordecai; April 20th, Forepaugh’s Circus, by invitation of the manager; April 25th, an entertainment was given by Post No. 5, G. A. R., at their rooms; Decoration Day, the boys went with Post No. 21, Gr. A. R., and were afterwards treated to ice cream by Mr. Harris; The Fourth of July was spent in a picnic in the woods at Angora, Mr. George W. Childs, with his usual thoughtful generosity, donating the ice cream; During the month of August those boys who had no place to spend their vacation were taken by the Superintendent to the woods in the neighborhood and enjoyed camp life for two weeks; September 21st, they had an enjoyable excursion to Atlantic City, through the kindness of the Superintendent of the West Jersey R. R. Co.; November 3d, by invitation of Mr. Jay Rial, the boys went to the Academy of Music to see “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which they enjoyed very much; November 28th, an agreeable entertainment, consisting of recitations and college songs, was given at the Home by the students of the P. E. Divinity School. References
