In addition to receiving funds from the State (when it was a Soldiers' Orphans school) and the Federal Government (when it was an Indian school) the Lincoln Institution received many donations and material gifts from local individuals and organizations. These donations and gifts are listed in the annual reports. This document discusses the donations which were structured as annual scholarships or endowments.
In 1870 Mary McHenry Cox initiated the scholarship scheme for the Lincoln Institution by collecting together donations from her church, Holy Trinity. This scholarship scheme swiftly spread to other Episcopalian churches in the central Philadelphia area. The scholarship information has been extracted from the annual reports of the Lincoln Institute and the Educational Home. For some years, the Lincoln Institution annual report lists the scholarships but not the scholars, while the Educational Home report lists the scholars.
No special treatments for those with a scholarship have been found. The money donated went directly into the Instiution bank accounts.
A scholarship was funded by a donation of $150 or more to the Lincoln Institution (later reduced to $125), or a donation $100 or more to the Educational Home, and later an endowment was funded by a donation of $2,000. In some years some scholarships were not totally funded, but the scholarships continued.
Also note that the dates in this document are the dates of the scholarships, not the dates of the annual reports. For example, the 1874 annual report lists the scholarships for 1873.
The following graph shows the number of scholarships over the lifetime of the Institution. The red bars mark the years where annual reports have been found. Some of the reports do not list information on the scholarships.
The number of scholarships in the 1870s was stable. In 1880 there was a complaint by some of the boys about the corporal punishment at the Institution and a newspaper exposé. The 1881 annual report did not list the students or scholarship. Among the responses to the complaint was a campaign to increase the number of scholarships. The Institution also decided to reduce the number of older boys and that initiative together with the change to become an Indian school caused a rapid reduction in the number of orphans and also the number of scholarships. No Indians were ever named to a scholarship.
Some of the scholarships continued into the 1890s. In the 1910s a number of endowments continued.
