Database record, Soldiers' Orphans at the Lincoln Institution
Another of our wards, in his eighteenth year, Albert H. Perkenpine, who had been one of our earliest inmates, and whose naturally joyous and happy disposition made him the favorite of all his comrades, whose employer counted on him for much in the future, and who only a few months before had publicly dedicated himself to the Master’s service (being one of our last confirmation class), was taken ill with typhoid fever at the same time when we were nursing his younger companion. It was judged best to remove him to the new infirmary at The Education Home as he became so nervous. He was taken there at once, and his mother sent for. She never left him, but together with the matrons of The Educational Home bestowed upon him all the devotion and care that affection could suggest. But all in vain ; he died on the 7th of October, in the full evidence of a true and living faith in the Saviour he had professed to serve. Lincoln Institution, 1877 Annual Report.
