Lincoln Institute

Can you tell me anything about the Lincoln Institute which was established to care for children of soldiers who died in the Civil War? E. W.

Incorporated May 9, 1866, the Lincoln Institute originally opened its doors at 308 S. 11th st., this city, as a home for boys between 12 and 21 whose fathers were killed while serving with the Union forces during the Civil War or died of disease contracted as a result of such service. As the boys grew older the institution outlived its usefullness and gradually was converted into a general home for boys. An auxiliary of the Lincoln Insititute was the Educational Home, 49th and Greenway ave. Incorporated in 1871, the latter opened in December 1873 and originally cared for orphans and destitute white children two years of age and upward. In later years it accepted Indian boys and the name was changed to Educational Home and Indian Training School. Still later it was devoted exclusively to Indian children under the title Educational Home for Indian Training. Ths building finally was sold in 1903 and the structure removed to provide building sites.
