The Lincoln Institution was created and run by Mary McHenry Cox. It had 4 phases. In the first phase (1866 -1884) it was a State-sponsored Civil War Soldier's Orphans' School for white Episcopalian boys; in the second phase (1884 - 1900) it was a Federally-funded Indian School; in the third phase (1900 - 1906) it was a privately-funded Indian School; and in the fourth phase (1907 - 1922) it was privately-funded orphanage for white, protestant boys. The Lincoln Institution occupied 4 sites, one on 11th Street in center-city Philadelphia; one on 49th Street in Philadelphia called the Educational Home; one in the Dakotas called the Meade Farm; and one spanning the border of Tredyffrin and Upper Merion townships on the Mainline called Ponemah. The Lincoln Institution and the Education Home produced annual reports, many of which have been located and digitized. Lists of all documents for a specific phase of the Lincoln Institution |
