St. John’s Episcopal Chapel |
Deed History: On the 22nd April 1854, Charles Wheatley (owner of the Wheatley mine), John Morris, and Dendy Sherwood, the trustees of St. John’s Protestant Episcopal Church, purchased 20,475 ft2 of land from Matthias J. Pennypacker for $1. The church seems to have been for the local miners, many who lived along Creek Road. In the 1860 Journal of the Convention of the Diocese of Pennsylvania St. John's Chapel is listed as not in union with Convention. This means the chapel was outside the control of the Diocese1. The church is on the 1873 atlas, but not the 1883 atlas.
