Meetings and other Activities

Meeting CANCELLED: 7:00 pm Monday, March 16th,Birds of Prey - presented by Patrick Miller of Miller’s Wildlife and Conservation Specialists

NEW Field Trip: 8 am, Saturday 28th March Sachs Bridge

We will meet at 8:00 AM in the parking area on the west side of Sachs Covered Bridge.  (Map attached. Note - you cannot drive to this parking area via Roberta Way.  You must enter Waterworks Road from Pumping Station Road.)
Hiking shoes are recommended.  There are no restroom facilities at this location.
Scott Wood will lead the walk.

The covered bridge is on Waterworks Road. The easiest thing to do is go out Steinwehr Avenue/Emmitsburg Road about 1.5 miles of south and go left on Millerstown Road/Pumping Station Road (opposite Wheatfield Road) and go about 1.75 miles. Take a left on Waterworks road (opposite Scott Road).

There is parking near the covered bridge and if that fills up, there are some other places to park on Waterworks road closer to the turnoff from Pumping Station Road.

If you are coming from 116 west (Fairfield), you can take a right on Blackhorse Tavern Road (just past Gettysburg Campground) and follow Blackhorse Tavern Road to Pumping Station Road. Take a right on Pumping Station Road and then go about 1/2 mile before making a left on Waterworks.

Annual Banquet: 5:30 pm, April 2nd, at Inn94

Field Trip: 8 am, Saturday 11th April Long Pine Reservoir Directions from route 30. Take route 233 north for 1.6 miles then turn left onto Milesburn road (dirt road). Take Milesburn road 1.4 miles to parking area and boat launch on the right.

Directions from Shippensburg Road. Take route 233 south for 5.5 miles. The right turn onto Milesburn Road is difficult to anticipate as it comes up quickly on a bend. It is after you pass the old reservoir site on the left. Then follow route above to parking area.

Meeting: 7:00 pm Monday, May 18th, Home Is Where You Lay Your Eggs – Nests, by Kathy Gingerich

You decide if you want to live in the city, suburbs or country. Will this be a temporary home or a forever home? You choose a design for your home. You select building materials, construction begins, you move in. For birds it is the same…

Find a location, choose and collect materials and construct a nest(s) to keep eggs and young alive and safe. Is this accomplished by the male, female or together? Since there are about 11,000 species of birds the answers to these mandates are fascinating!

Kathy Gingerich taught Earth Science and Astronomy for 28 years, mostly at Red Land High School in York County. She ran the West Shore School District’s Environmental Center at Pinchot State Park for 10 years. She was awarded for having the top Environmental Program in the state of Pennsylvania. After retiring, Kathy continues as a volunteer, leading nature walks for school groups at Pinchot State Park. As a member of the Garden Club of York, Kathy is the Chair of the Birds, Bees and Butterflies Committee. She is a past recipient of grants from Audubon and National Geographic Society, National Secondary Teacher of the Year award winner, and was a teacher consultant to the Society for many years.

Annual Picnic: 5 pm, Monday 10th August, Location: Oakside Park, Biglerville, details to follow.

Educational Initiatives

Each year, South Mountain Audubon chooses a school to be the recipient of new library books chosen by the school’s librarian, approved by our board, and funded with members’ donations to our education budget. Recently the Alloway Creek Elementary School in the Littlestown Area School District received their donation. Pictured below is the school’s librarian, Linda Fink, with the new collection.
