The two consumables used by the engines in the early days were wood and water, and the railroad made provision for restocking on route: July 31, 1849 Proposal for Wood. – Superintendent’s Office, P&C Railway, Parkesburg, Chester Co., July 28, 1849. PROPOSALS will be received at this Office until August 31, 1849, for the delivery of Wood at the several stations on the line of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway, from the Inclined Plain to Columbia. Bidders will state the kind and quality of the wood they will furnish, and the price at each Station, - also, when they can commence the delivery and the quantity they can furnish each month.
